What Liberty Mutual publishes about itself
Liberty Mutual describes its mutual status as what lets it take a long-term view and answer to policyholders rather than shareholders. It sells online, by phone and through agents, and states directly that products, prices and savings may vary based on state and how you purchase. The part worth understanding is underneath: it publishes all thirty-seven of its underwriting companies with their licensing, and they are not interchangeable — some are licensed everywhere, three Safeco companies cover different territories, and two write only in Texas.

Safeco was Liberty Mutual, and now it is not a brand at all
Liberty Mutual states that Safeco was acquired in 2008 and kept its name, and that "the Safeco name is now retired" — existing Safeco customers keep their agent and their policy, with the name changed. safeco.com now redirects to Liberty Mutual’s independent-agent site. Three Safeco companies remain on the underwriting-companies list, because retiring a brand does not dissolve the insurers behind it.
The licensing is published company by company
Liberty Mutual publishes each entity with its NAIC number and where it is licensed. Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is licensed in every state plus DC, Puerto Rico and Canada; LM General is licensed everywhere except Alaska, Hawaii and New Jersey; Liberty County Mutual and Liberty Lloyds write only in Texas.
RightTrack publishes what it is worth
Liberty Mutual states that RightTrack can save up to 30% for safe driving. It is the only auto discount on that page for which it publishes a figure.
They do not
The RightTrack discount is narrower than it sounds
Liberty Mutual’s own caveat: the RightTrack driving score applies only to certain coverages, not to the total policy premium. A percentage off part of a bill is not the same as a percentage off the bill.
When it was founded
Liberty Mutual’s consumer site says only that it has been trusted by drivers for over 100 years. It publishes no founding year on any page we could read, so we do not print one. It is a small thing, and printing a year we could not verify would be a larger one.
Life insurance
Liberty Mutual’s own support page names Protective in connection with life insurance products, but does not publish the arrangement. If you are offered life through Liberty Mutual, ask whose policy it is.
Whether an agent quoting you is exclusive
Liberty Mutual runs a portal for independent agents, and its own domain redirects its agent finder to Comparion Insurance Agency. Whether Comparion agents place business with other carriers is not published. Worth asking whoever quotes you: do you sell anyone else?
