What is available

The main options an agent will talk through with you, and what each one actually does.

Term life

Coverage for a fixed period, commonly 10 to 30 years, at a level premium. The least expensive way to buy a large death benefit, which is why it fits mortgages and young families.

Whole life

Permanent coverage with a level premium and a cash value that builds over time. Costs considerably more per dollar of death benefit than term.

Universal life

Permanent coverage with flexible premiums and adjustable death benefit. More moving parts, which cuts both ways.

No-exam options

Some carriers issue coverage without a paramedical exam using accelerated underwriting. Availability depends on age, amount, and health history.

Ask about

  1. Should this be term or permanent coverage, and why that one for me?

Term covers a period; permanent covers whenever you die and costs more for the same benefit. The right answer depends on what the money is for, not on which is cheaper per thousand.

  2. Can this term policy be converted later without a new medical review?

A conversion option lets you move to permanent coverage if your health changes. It costs nothing to have and it cannot be added after the fact.

  3. Who should be named as beneficiary, and what happens if they die first?

A named beneficiary is paid directly and quickly. An estate is not, and that is where the delays and the legal costs come from.

  4. Do I already have coverage through work, and does it follow me if I leave?

Employer coverage is usually a multiple of salary and usually ends with the job. It is worth knowing before buying to fill a gap that may not be there.

Read these out if it helps. A licensed agent expects to be asked.

What a licensed life agent can actually help with

Life insurance is not discounted the way auto and home are. Pricing comes from underwriting — your age, health, and the class you are placed in. Where an agent earns their keep is in the placement.

  • Getting the right rate class

Carriers differ sharply on how they treat controlled conditions, family history, and past tobacco use. The same person can be rated two classes apart at two carriers.

  • Choosing a term length that matches the need

Coverage that outlives the debt it was bought for is wasted premium. Coverage that expires first is worse.

  • Getting the amount right

Enough to clear the mortgage, replace income for the years it is needed, and cover final costs — without buying a number that came from a slogan.

  • Riders that matter

Accelerated death benefit, waiver of premium, child riders, and conversion privileges vary a lot between carriers and are easy to miss on a website.

  • Converting or replacing existing coverage

If you already have a term policy, it may be convertible without new underwriting. Replacing coverage without checking that first is a common and expensive mistake.

Life Insurance questions

Short answers to what people ask before they dial.

How much life insurance do I need?

A common starting point is enough to clear outstanding debts, replace your income for the years your family would need it, and cover final expenses. It is a conversation, not a formula — which is why it goes better on a phone call.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not always. Many carriers now offer accelerated underwriting without a paramedical exam for applicants in good health within certain age and coverage limits. Whether you qualify depends on your specifics.

Is term or whole life better?

They solve different problems. Term buys the most death benefit per dollar for a defined period. Whole life costs substantially more and lasts for life with a cash value component. Neither is universally correct.

Is the death benefit taxed?

Life insurance death benefits paid to a named beneficiary are generally not subject to federal income tax. Estate tax treatment is a separate question and depends on ownership. Ask a tax professional about your own situation — InsuranceXR does not give tax advice.

Can I be turned down?

Yes, fully underwritten policies can be declined or rated. That is exactly why it is worth talking to an agent who works with multiple carriers rather than applying blind to one.

Cannot talk right now?
