Amica car insurance, as Amica describes it

A policyholder-owned mutual that sells nothing through agents, and one of only two here that say their telematics cannot raise your rate.

Calling connects you with a licensed independent agent — not with Amica.

What Amica publishes about itself

Amica calls itself a direct writer of personal insurance, and it means it literally: there are no independent agents and no captive agents, only its own website and its own phone line. It is a mutual owned by its policyholders, chartered in Rhode Island in 1907, and it says it is the oldest mutual insurer of automobiles in the United States. Two of its published positions are unusual, and both are in plain words: its telematics program cannot raise a rate, and it says in plain words which repairs it will and will not guarantee.

What is settled, and what is not

Everything on the left is stated by Amica. Everything on the right is a question their published material does not answer — which makes it a question worth asking on the phone.

They state this

  • No agents at all

Amica describes itself as a direct writer of personal insurance with auto, homeowners, personal excess liability and marine coverages. Quotes start online with a ZIP code, or by phone; its representatives are described as available around the clock.

  • Its telematics program cannot raise your rate

Asked directly whether StreetSmart affects rates, Amica answers: no, driving data will not impact your rates, it only affects the premium discount you receive. It publishes up to 20% off premium and up to 10% just for registering, and names the 30 jurisdictions where it is offered.

  • It says exactly which repairs it guarantees

At a referral shop, Amica states it will guarantee the materials and workmanship and that your cost will usually not exceed its payment plus your deductible. At any other registered shop it states plainly that it does not guarantee the quality of repairs. You keep the choice either way.

  • The mutual can pay a dividend

Amica publishes a dividend policy that returns a portion of your premium if certain conditions are met, and says you have to call to discuss what is available in your state. That is a feature of the mutual structure, not a discount.

  • Amica Mutual is licensed everywhere

Its licensing page states Amica Mutual Insurance Company is authorized to do business in all states, with Amica Life in all states except Hawaii.

They do not

  • Licensed everywhere is not quotable everywhere

The quote flow is driven by ZIP code rather than by state, and Amica’s own strings include "unfortunately, this insurance is unavailable in" a given ZIP and "call to learn more about what else is available in your area". Being licensed in your state does not settle whether a given product quotes online where you live.

  • Where its second P&C company writes

Amica Property and Casualty Insurance Company is described only as authorized in "a limited number of states". The limited list is not published, and it matters because it is a different insurer from the mutual.

  • Flood is not Amica’s policy

Amica states it can help you get flood quotes and answer questions, and that flood insurance comes through the National Flood Insurance Program and some private insurers. It places the coverage; it does not write it.

Discounts Amica names

These are the credits Amica lists on its own site. Which of them you qualify for, what each is worth, and whether it is already on a policy you hold are all questions for an agent — none of them is published, because none of them is the same for two people.

Amica questions

Does Amica use insurance agents?

No. Amica describes itself as a direct writer, and there is no agent channel of any kind — not independent, not captive. You quote online with a ZIP code or call them. That is unusual among large personal-lines carriers and it is the defining fact about buying from them.

Can StreetSmart raise my Amica rate?

Amica says no. Its own FAQ answers the question directly: driving data will not impact your rates, it only affects the premium discount you receive. It publishes up to 20% off premium and up to 10% for registering, in thirty named states and DC. Several carriers state the opposite about their own programs, so it is worth asking on any policy you compare.

Will Amica guarantee my car repairs?

At one of its referral shops, yes — it states it will guarantee materials and workmanship and that your cost will usually not exceed its payment plus your deductible. At any other registered shop it states it does not guarantee the quality of the repairs, and that if the shop charges more it will negotiate but cannot promise to pay the difference. You can still use the shop you want.

Is Amica available in my state?

Amica Mutual is authorized to do business in all states. Whether a particular product quotes online where you live is a separate question — the quote flow works from your ZIP code and Amica publishes language for products that are unavailable in a given area, or available only by phone.

Can this site get me a Amica quote?

No. InsuranceXR is not an insurance agency and does not quote any company. Amica sells directly to its customers, so no independent agent can quote it — for a Amica price you would go to Amica yourself. Calling the number on this page reaches a licensed independent agent who can quote the companies they are appointed with, and Amica will not be among them.

Find out who will actually write you

Whether Amica — or anyone else — will write your profile, and at what price, is underwriting. No website can answer it. A licensed agent can, on a call that costs nothing.
