Auto-Owners car insurance, as Auto-Owners describes it

The only company here with no way to buy online — by its own choice, and in its own words.

Calling connects you with a licensed independent agent — not with Auto-Owners.

What Auto-Owners publishes about itself

Auto-Owners states a choice that most carriers leave to their fine print. It states that it works solely through independent agents, that it offers its products that way because of the advantages agents bring, and that it is not going to pretend there is no option to buy insurance online, because there is. Every quote button on its site leads to an agency locator. The group is led by a mutual, with four stock subsidiaries underneath it that write in different subsets of the footprint, and it states that footprint as a count rather than a list.

What is settled, and what is not

Everything on the left is stated by Auto-Owners. Everything on the right is a question their published material does not answer — which makes it a question worth asking on the phone.

They state this

  • Independent agents, and nothing else

In its own words: Auto-Owners works solely through independent agents to ensure you are getting the right protection from a skilled professional. Every quote path on the site is an agency locator, and the locator takes an address or ZIP — it is not a state selector.

  • There is no online quote

None. The only self-service on the site is for existing policyholders — paying a bill, viewing documents, tracking a claim, filing a glass claim. Auto-Owners acknowledges the alternative exists and says it is sticking with agents.

  • A mutual leading four stock companies

Auto-Owners Insurance Company is the mutual and the group’s largest insurer. Owners Insurance operates in 25 of the 26 states, Home-Owners in 9, Property-Owners in Georgia, Indiana and Michigan, and Southern-Owners in Florida. The group also includes Atlantic Casualty, Concord Group and Capital Insurance Group.

  • You report a claim through your agent

Its own instruction is to call your local independent Auto-Owners agent. It states over 100 claim offices across its 26 states, around-the-clock claim service, mobile response vehicles and eight storm teams.

  • It publishes the good student figure

Up to 20% for a student maintaining a B average or better, in its own words. It publishes no percentage for any other auto discount.

They do not

  • Which 26 states

Auto-Owners publishes the count repeatedly and the list nowhere. Its annual report shows the footprint only as a map image whose alternative text names no states. The one enumerated list on the site is for its life company, in 29 states — a different company and a different footprint, and not a substitute.

  • Whether repairs are guaranteed

Not published. There is no direct-repair-program workmanship warranty on its claims pages, which is not the same as there being none. Glass claims go through Safelite Solutions or Quest Claims depending on the state, and Auto-Owners does say you can use the glass shop of your choice.

  • Whether driver monitoring can raise a rate

Auto-Owners publishes no named consumer telematics program. It does offer a Teen Driver Monitoring discount tied to a GPS unit or an eligible phone app, and it does not say whether that monitoring can move a rate in either direction. Ask.

  • Pet insurance is not theirs

Auto-Owners states pet medical insurance comes from Auto-Owners and Figo, with a 5% discount when bought through an agent representing them. Its flood page names no underwriting entity at all.

Discounts Auto-Owners names

These are the credits Auto-Owners lists on its own site. Which of them you qualify for, what each is worth, and whether it is already on a policy you hold are all questions for an agent — none of them is published, because none of them is the same for two people.

Auto-Owners questions

Can I get an Auto-Owners quote online?

No. Auto-Owners states it works solely through independent agents, and every quote button on its site leads to an agency locator. Its own page on the subject says it is not going to pretend there is no option to buy insurance online — there is — and that it chooses agents anyway. If you want a price, you are calling or visiting an agency.

Which states does Auto-Owners write in?

It says 26, and does not say which 26. The count appears on its about page, its history page and its claims pages; the list appears nowhere in text on its own site, and its annual report renders the footprint only as a map image. The 29-state list you may find is for Auto-Owners Life Insurance Company, which is a different company. An independent agent in your state can answer this in one sentence.

Does Auto-Owners guarantee repairs?

Not published. Its claims pages describe more than 100 claim offices, around-the-clock service and storm teams, but no workmanship warranty on a repair network. Absence of a published guarantee is not the same as the absence of one, so it is worth asking directly.

Is Auto-Owners a mutual?

The lead company is. Auto-Owners Insurance Company is described as a mutual and the group’s largest insurer; Owners, Home-Owners, Property-Owners and Southern-Owners are stock companies writing in different parts of the footprint. No parent above the mutual is published, which is consistent with the structure.

Can this site get me a Auto-Owners quote?

No. InsuranceXR is not an insurance agency and does not quote any company. Auto-Owners sells through independent agents, so some independent agents are appointed with it and some are not. The agent who answers can tell you which companies they represent; we cannot promise Auto-Owners is one of them.
