Erie car insurance, as Erie describes it

One of the few carriers that answers "where do you write?" with a list. Twelve states and DC, and that is the whole answer.

Calling connects you with a licensed independent agent — not with Erie.

What Erie publishes about itself

Erie is worth understanding structurally before anything else. The insurer is Erie Insurance Exchange, a reciprocal exchange; Erie Indemnity Company, which is listed on NASDAQ, is its management and services company, not the underwriter. Erie publishes each affiliate with its NAIC number and the jurisdictions it is licensed in, and states plainly that the companies within the group are not licensed to operate in all states. It sells through roughly 14,000 independent agents, with an online quote for auto only.

What is settled, and what is not

Everything on the left is stated by Erie. Everything on the right is a question their published material does not answer — which makes it a question worth asking on the phone.

They state this

  • Twelve states and DC, published by entity

Across its affiliates the consumer footprint is the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Erie publishes which entity is licensed where, with NAIC numbers, rather than a single blended claim.

  • The listed company is not the insurer

Erie Indemnity Company provides sales, underwriting and administrative services to Erie Insurance Exchange, a reciprocal exchange. If you have seen Erie described as a publicly traded insurer, that is the management company, not the one on your policy.

  • Its telematics program cannot affect your rate

Asked whether YourTurn affects rates, Erie answers: no, participating will not impact your rate. It is a rewards program rather than a rating program, and it is not offered in Kentucky, DC, New York or North Carolina.

  • Repairs carry a workmanship warranty, and you can opt out

Erie states its Direct Repair Program shops offer workmanship warranties and are admitted on criteria for training, equipment and professionalism — and that you always have the choice to use any shop you trust. Glass runs through a network affiliated with Safelite Solutions.

  • It publishes the teenSMART figure

Drivers who complete the teenSMART program may be eligible for up to a 20% discount on an Erie auto policy. It is the only auto discount percentage Erie publishes.

They do not

  • The online quote is auto only

Erie publishes an online auto quote entry point; home, life and business route to an agent request instead. When we checked, the online quote URL redirected back to the homepage, so we can tell you the path is published but not that it runs end to end.

  • Rate Lock is not what it sounds like

Erie Rate Lock is an endorsement, not a guarantee. Its own disclosure: rates are subject to change if you add or remove a vehicle or driver, or change where the vehicle is garaged; it does not guarantee continued coverage; it is not available in all states, and is limited to three years in Virginia.

  • Which affiliate writes you

Five property and casualty entities with different licenses — the Exchange itself is not licensed in New York, and Erie Insurance Property & Casualty is not licensed in Ohio. Which one issues your policy depends on your state and product.

  • Discounts with state carve-outs

Erie publishes several: driver training is not available in Kentucky or North Carolina, reduced usage is not available in Kentucky, and the youthful driver longevity discount has different rules in Ohio, West Virginia and New York and is unavailable in North Carolina.

Discounts Erie names

These are the credits Erie lists on its own site. Which of them you qualify for, what each is worth, and whether it is already on a policy you hold are all questions for an agent — none of them is published, because none of them is the same for two people.

  • Multi-policy

  • Payment perks

Erie questions

Is Erie insurance available in my state?

Only if you are in one of thirteen jurisdictions: the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia or Wisconsin. Erie states directly that the companies within its group are not licensed to operate in all states, and publishes the licensure entity by entity.

Can YourTurn raise my Erie rate?

Erie says no. Its own FAQ answers that participating in YourTurn will not impact your rate — it pays small rewards for tracked driving instead. It is not available in Kentucky, DC, New York or North Carolina. Several other carriers state the opposite about their own programs, so this is a real difference rather than a marketing one.

Is Erie a publicly traded company?

The management company is; the insurer is not. Erie Indemnity Company trades on NASDAQ and provides sales, underwriting and administrative services to Erie Insurance Exchange, which is a reciprocal exchange and the entity that actually underwrites. They are two different things and Erie describes them as such.

Does Erie Rate Lock freeze my premium?

Not unconditionally. Erie states rates are subject to change if you add or remove a vehicle or a driver, or change where the vehicle is principally garaged — and that Rate Lock does not guarantee continued insurance coverage. It is not available in all states and is limited to three years in Virginia.

Can this site get me a Erie quote?

No. InsuranceXR is not an insurance agency and does not quote any company. Erie sells through independent agents, so some independent agents are appointed with it and some are not. The agent who answers can tell you which companies they represent; we cannot promise Erie is one of them.

Find out who will actually write you

Whether Erie — or anyone else — will write your profile, and at what price, is underwriting. No website can answer it. A licensed agent can, on a call that costs nothing.
