Farmers car insurance, as Farmers describes it

Three buying channels and four corporate structures under one brand — including a Texas county mutual and a Lloyd’s-plan insurer.

Calling connects you with a licensed independent agent — not with Farmers.

What Farmers publishes about itself

Farmers describes its three main insurers — Farmers Insurance Exchange, Fire Insurance Exchange and Truck Insurance Exchange — as inter-insurance exchanges owned by their policyholders and organized under California law. Farmers Group, Inc. manages them as attorney-in-fact, and Farmers states that the exchanges hold no ownership interest in that management company and it holds none in them. Underneath the brand also sit Foremost, Bristol West, 21st Century and Toggle, a Texas county mutual and a Lloyd’s-plan insurer. It reaches customers through exclusive agencies, independent agents and its own call centers and website.

What is settled, and what is not

Everything on the left is stated by Farmers. Everything on the right is a question their published material does not answer — which makes it a question worth asking on the phone.

They state this

  • Three channels at once

In its own words, Farmers sells through a network of exclusive agencies, tens of thousands of independent agents, and direct sales online and through company call centers. Few carriers run all three.

  • The core insurers are owned by policyholders

Farmers Insurance Exchange, Fire Insurance Exchange and Truck Insurance Exchange are inter-insurance exchanges owned by their policyholders, organized under California law. That is a different structure from a stock company and from a mutual.

  • All fifty states and DC

Farmers states it serves households and businesses across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with the caveat that not all its insurers are authorized in all states and a per-entity license list published separately.

  • Repairs are guaranteed for as long as you own the car

Farmers states you can use a shop from its network of trained repair facilities and that it guarantees the repairs as long as you own the vehicle. Using an out-of-network shop remains an option.

  • Signal is not available everywhere

Farmers states its Signal telematics program is unavailable in Florida, Hawaii and New York, and that the Signal discount is not available in California.

They do not

  • Signal can raise your renewal premium

Farmers says so twice, in its own words: riskier driving behavior could raise your premium at renewal, and riskier behaviors could result in a higher renewal premium rather than a discount. There is an enrollment discount at the front; the renewal is the part to ask about.

  • Who ultimately owns the management company

Farmers Group, Inc. manages the exchanges, and Farmers publishes no statement of who owns Farmers Group. You will find an answer elsewhere; you will not find it from Farmers, and we are not going to print one we could not source.

  • The life company sits on the other side of the structure

Life is issued by Farmers New World Life Insurance Company, which Farmers states is a subsidiary of Farmers Group, Inc. — the management company, not the policyholder-owned exchanges that write your auto policy. A structural distinction worth knowing if you are bundling.

  • Some products are partners, not Farmers

Its own navigation files pet, electronic device protection and Medicare products under "Partner Products". Pet is underwritten by companies Farmers states are not affiliated with it. For the other two, the underwriter is not published.

Discounts Farmers names

These are the credits Farmers lists on its own site. Which of them you qualify for, what each is worth, and whether it is already on a policy you hold are all questions for an agent — none of them is published, because none of them is the same for two people.

Farmers questions

Can Farmers Signal raise my rate?

Farmers says it can, and says it twice: riskier driving behavior could raise your premium at renewal, and riskier behaviors could result in a higher renewal premium rather than a discount. There is a discount for enrolling. The question worth asking is what happens at the second renewal, not the first.

Who owns Farmers?

The three core insurers are owned by their policyholders — Farmers describes them as inter-insurance exchanges organized under California law. They are managed by Farmers Group, Inc. as attorney-in-fact, and Farmers states that the exchanges hold no ownership interest in Farmers Group and it holds none in them. Who owns Farmers Group itself is not published on their site, so we do not state it.

Is a Farmers agent an independent agent?

It depends which one you reach. Farmers sells through its own exclusive agencies, through tens of thousands of independent agents, and directly through call centers and its website. An exclusive agency sells Farmers; an independent agent who represents Farmers also sells other companies. Worth asking at the start of the call.

Does Farmers write in my state?

Farmers states it serves all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its own footnote adds that not all of its insurers are authorized in all states, and it publishes a per-entity license list — so the brand is available everywhere while any given company behind it may not be.

Can this site get me a Farmers quote?

No. InsuranceXR is not an insurance agency and does not quote any company. Farmers sells through more than one channel, so whether a given agent can quote it depends on their own appointments. The agent who answers can tell you which companies they represent; we cannot promise Farmers is one of them.

Find out who will actually write you

Whether Farmers — or anyone else — will write your profile, and at what price, is underwriting. No website can answer it. A licensed agent can, on a call that costs nothing.
