American Family car insurance, as American Family describes it

Two true statements about where it writes, and only one is about the policy you would buy: the group covers 50 states, the car insurance nineteen.

Calling connects you with a licensed independent agent — not with American Family.

What American Family publishes about itself

American Family publishes an unusually complete list of its underwriting companies — twenty-five of them, with NAIC numbers, spanning the mutual parent, the Homesite and Main Street America groups, three further mutuals and a Texas Lloyd’s-plan entity. That breadth is why the group can say it operates in 50 states and the District of Columbia. It is not the number that matters if you are shopping for an American Family car policy: its own state page for car insurance offers nineteen states, and a separate page exists for areas where it cannot quote online at all.

What is settled, and what is not

Everything on the left is stated by American Family. Everything on the right is a question their published material does not answer — which makes it a question worth asking on the phone.

They state this

  • It is a mutual, approaching its centenary

American Family traces itself to Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, founded in Madison, Wisconsin in 1927, renamed in 1963. Its own about page notes it will turn 100 in 2027.

  • Own-brand car insurance covers nineteen states

Its car-insurance-by-state page offers Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin — and no others.

  • The group is much larger than the brand

American Family publishes twenty-five underwriting companies, including the Homesite group, Main Street America, Connect, three separate mutuals and Homesite Lloyd’s of Texas. That is how the group reaches 50 states and DC while the American Family brand does not.

  • You buy through an American Family agent

It describes contracting with more than 2,400 independent contractor agency owners — which is a statement about how those agents are employed, not about them selling other companies. It also runs a page for areas where it cannot quote online and asks you to find a local agent instead.

  • DriveMyWay publishes its enrollment discount

American Family states a 15% enrollment discount for its DriveMyWay telematics program. The program scores phone use, hard braking, speeding, and evening and late-night driving.

They do not

  • DriveMyWay can raise your rate

In its own words: most drivers save by participating, though higher-risk drivers may see their rates increase. Worth reading twice before enrolling — and worth asking what happens to a driver on your policy who does not enroll, because their score is not simply left out of the calculation.

  • Which lines it does not underwrite itself

Unlike some carriers here, American Family publishes no "not underwritten by us" disclosure that we could find. Its travel product is offered with "strategic partners" and names no underwriter, and it has a brokerage arm whose lines are not published. If you are offered something other than auto or home, ask whose paper it is.

  • How claims and repairs are handled

Not published anywhere we could reach. There is no repair-network guarantee statement to report, which is not the same as there being no guarantee — it is a question for the call.

Discounts American Family names

These are the credits American Family lists on its own site. Which of them you qualify for, what each is worth, and whether it is already on a policy you hold are all questions for an agent — none of them is published, because none of them is the same for two people.

American Family questions

Is American Family car insurance available in my state?

Its own car-insurance-by-state page offers nineteen: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. You may also see American Family say it operates in 50 states and DC — that counts its Homesite, Main Street America and Connect companies, not American Family car insurance.

Are American Family agents independent agents?

No, and the wording invites the mistake. American Family describes contracting with more than 2,400 "independent contractor agency owners" — that describes how the agents are employed, not that they sell other companies. An American Family agent quotes American Family.

Can DriveMyWay raise my rate?

American Family says it can: most drivers save by participating, though higher-risk drivers may see their rates increase. There is a 15% enrollment discount and a 99-trip trial, and unenrolling during the trial forfeits the introductory discount. Ask how a driver on the policy who does not enroll is scored.

Who underwrites an American Family policy?

One of twenty-five companies it publishes with NAIC numbers — the mutual parent American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I., plus the Homesite group, Main Street America, Connect, three further mutuals and a Texas Lloyd’s-plan entity. Which one issues your policy depends on the product and your state.

Can this site get me a American Family quote?

No. InsuranceXR is not an insurance agency and does not quote any company. American Family sells through its own agents, so an independent agent cannot quote it. Calling the number on this page reaches a licensed independent agent who can quote the companies they are appointed with — for a American Family price you would contact a American Family agent directly.
