GEICO car insurance, as GEICO describes it

Eleven insurance companies marketing under one trademark, owned by Berkshire Hathaway. Here is what they publish, and what they leave open.

What GEICO publishes about itself

GEICO is not one company. Its corporate ownership page lists eleven insurance companies that “market collectively under the trademark GEICO®”, all wholly owned by Berkshire Hathaway, and its states-of-operation page shows that they are not all licensed in the same places. Separately, GEICO Insurance Agency places business with insurers that GEICO does not own — so a policy bought through GEICO is not necessarily underwritten by a GEICO company. None of this is hidden; all of it is on their site, and none of it is obvious from the advertising.

What is settled, and what is not

Everything on the left is stated by GEICO. Everything on the right is a question their published material does not answer — which makes it a question worth asking on the phone.

They state this

  • They sell direct, and started that way

GEICO's own account of its business model says it pioneered selling directly to customers and continues that practice. You can buy a policy without going through an agent at all — which is unusual enough among large carriers to be the defining fact about them.

  • There are agents too

GEICO's agent locator shows two categories, local GEICO agents and independent agencies. So “direct only” is not accurate either. Whether the local agents sell other companies' products is not stated on that page.

  • Eleven companies, different licenses

GEICO states its companies insure over 16 million customers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its published states-of-operation list shows the licensing is uneven underneath that: three of the eleven are not licensed in nine states, and one writes only in Texas.

  • The repair guarantee is written down

Through the Auto Repair Xpress program, GEICO states that it and the repair facility guarantee the repairs for as long as you own the vehicle, with the guarantee provided in writing on delivery. It also states you can use any shop you choose.

  • Claims staff around the clock

GEICO states its claims representatives are available anytime to help file a claim, and that claims can be started online or by phone.

They do not

  • The GEICO name does not always mean a GEICO company

GEICO Insurance Agency places business with affiliated and non-affiliated insurers, and GEICO's own page says each of those insurers “has sole financial responsibility for its own insurance products”. Which company actually carries your risk is a fair question to ask before you buy, and it is not answered in advance.

  • Which of the eleven would write you

The entity matters, because the rates that apply to you are the ones that entity filed with your state. Their pages list which companies are licensed where; they do not say which one you would land in.

  • Whether they will write you at all

Underwriting is where carriers differ most and publish least. No carrier publishes who it declines, and a lapse, a violation, or a vehicle can change the answer. It is not a question any website can settle for you.

Discounts GEICO names

These are the credits GEICO lists on its own site. Which of them you qualify for, what each is worth, and whether it is already on a policy you hold are all questions for an agent — none of them is published, because none of them is the same for two people.

GEICO questions

Can I get a GEICO quote by calling the number on this page?

No. The number here reaches a licensed independent agent, not GEICO. InsuranceXR is not an insurance agency and cannot quote any company. If you specifically want GEICO, go to geico.com or call them directly — they sell direct, so there is nothing between you and them.

Does GEICO use agents, or is it direct only?

Both. GEICO says it pioneered selling directly to customers and still does, and its agent locator also lists local GEICO agents and independent agencies. Direct is the channel it is known for, not the only one it has.

Who actually underwrites a GEICO policy?

One of eleven insurance companies that market under the GEICO trademark, all owned by Berkshire Hathaway — or, for some products, an insurer GEICO does not own at all. GEICO Insurance Agency places business with affiliated and non-affiliated insurers, and states that each insurer has sole financial responsibility for its own products. Ask which company is on the policy.

Is GEICO available in every state?

GEICO states that its companies insure customers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Underneath that, licensing varies by entity: three of the eleven companies are not licensed in California, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota or South Dakota, and one is licensed only in Texas.

Find out who will actually write you

Whether GEICO — or anyone else — will write your profile, and at what price, is underwriting. No website can answer it. A licensed agent can, on a call that costs nothing.
